Here’s a few notes from the video above:

Neal Kinsey specializes in working with problem soils. His services include analyzing soils and recommending the best course of action in order to grow your crops. In this interview, Neal Kinsey goes over lime stone (also known as white lime or agricultural lime) and the value of calcium in agriculture.

Lime stone is important for soil pH AND also important because calcium is needed in the soil so that ALL other nutrients can get into the crop. Otherwise, you’ll need a lot more fertilizer to get the nutrients into your crops. Additionally, if there isn’t enough calcium in the soil, then the final crop will not have much calcium as well.

The only way to really know how much calcium you need is to do a complete soil test that goes beyond just pH. You need to know how much of each nutrient is in your soil (calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium) before treating your soil for optimal yield.

After testing several soil samples in Belize, Neal Kinsey has found soils in Belize tend to vary by area. However, the majority of the soil’s in Belize have been shown to be lacking in calcium. As a result, using lime stone high in calcium can correct this problem.

There are also some areas in Belize that are short in calcium and magnesium. In which case, you need to use dolomite lime in order to supply magnesium as well.

Neal Kinsey has not only tested soils in Belize but also lime stone deposits. This is important to do because you need to know what you’re putting into your soil so that you can correct deficiencies.

Depending on the results of your soil test, you may need calcium carbonate, dolomitic lime, or a combination of the two.

Neal Kinsey ended his interview with Limbe by stating the following:

“Lime stone is the most under-valued material that makes a difference in terms of production for agriculture in the world. Not just under-valued in terms of price but also under-valued in terms of what it will do for you. Because until you get the calcium right, you don’t have the potential to get the right yield. And until you get the magnesium right, you don’t have the potential there to get the most yield.”

Recommendations: Get a soil test done in order to determine what your soil really needs. This will make a difference in your yield that will more than pay for itself.
